Here's what happens, in plain terms, when you visit this site.

What's collected

When you load a page here, a small script sends a one-time visit notification. It includes:

• An approximate location derived from your IP address (city, region, and country — never GPS, and never anything you enter).
• Your device type, browser, and operating system, read from your browser's user-agent string.
• The page you visited and the page that referred you here, if any.
• Your network's timezone, internet provider, and ASN, from your IP address.

Your IP address itself is used to work out the above at the time of your visit, but it is not stored or forwarded anywhere by this site as part of that notification. No precise coordinates or postal codes are collected.

Why

This is an independent, personal site. Visit notifications help understand who's engaging with the research and posts here, and roughly where in the world readers are located. This data is not used for advertising, and is not sold or shared with anyone beyond what's described below.

Where it goes

Each visit is reported as a private notification that only the site owner sees. It isn't added to any analytics dashboard, ad platform, or third-party tracker, and no profile is built up about any individual visitor over time.

What isn't collected

This site does not use cookies for tracking, does not fingerprint visitors beyond the basic device/browser info above, and does not follow anyone across other websites. A visit is recorded once per browser tab session (using temporary session storage, which is cleared when the tab is closed) — reloading or browsing to another page in the same session doesn't send it again.

How long it's kept

Notification records persist until manually deleted, which is done from time to time.

Your choices

To opt out, block third-party requests to api.rahulshah.net in your browser — the rest of the site works the same either way.
